How Are Solar Panels Tested for Quality and Performance?

As solar panel technology continues to improve, an increasing number of businesses and homeowners are making the switch to solar energy. But with this increased demand has come an influx of cheaper, lower-quality panels to the market. So how do you know a panel is actually reliable?

International Testing Standards

Solar panels sold in New Zealand must meet several international standards:

  • IEC 61215: This standard tests crystalline silicon solar panels for performance and durability. Tests include thermal cycling, damp heat, humidity freeze, and mechanical load testing.
  • IEC 61730: Safety testing standard covering electrical safety, mechanical integrity, and fire resistance.
  • IEC 61701: Salt mist corrosion testing — particularly important for coastal installations.

What Do the Tests Involve?

Thermal Cycling

Panels are subjected to hundreds of cycles of extreme temperature variation, from -40°C to +85°C. This simulates years of real-world temperature change and tests for cracking, delamination, and electrical performance degradation.

Damp Heat Testing

Panels are exposed to 85°C and 85% relative humidity for 1,000 hours. This accelerated ageing test reveals the susceptibility of panels to moisture-induced degradation, a common cause of premature failure.

Mechanical Load Testing

Panels are tested for resistance to static mechanical loads from wind and snow. This is critical for ensuring panels remain secure in strong winds — particularly relevant in tropical New Zealand where cyclone conditions can occur.

Hail Impact Testing

25mm ice balls are fired at panels at speeds above 23 m/s. Quality panels withstand this without cracking.

UV Degradation Testing

Panels are exposed to high-intensity UV light to simulate years of sun exposure and test for encapsulant yellowing or degradation.

Tier 1 Classification

You may have heard solar panels described as "Tier 1." This classification, developed by the Bloomberg New Energy Finance agency, is based on manufacturer bankability and history — not directly on quality testing. However, Tier 1 manufacturers generally invest more heavily in quality control and research.
